The remaining hooch will also be ‘tastebuddy’ now if you decant them but can also be cellared for 5+ years. The Penna Lane will improve for over a decade. First Creek’s Botanica PG is dry with a mineral edge, pear aromas and flavours. Claymore’s Riesling offers lemons and limes, great length and texture and the Turkey Flat is a textural blend of the classic Rhone white varietals of Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier. Subtle initially, it has the balance and texture to bust out a snappy tango with a roast chook. All kinds of stone fruit going on here; kernels, fresh and roasted. There’s also ginger, cashews and a bready, almost biscuity aspect. The Hastwell Temp is right in its prime drinking window. It opens with an explosion of liquorice and coffee on the nose which lead to ripe cherries and spice on the palate. Tannins are fine and build as you drink. Drink it soon. Farmer’s Leap Shiraz is a robust and black-fruited Shiraz which is hitting its straps now at 5 years of age and still has a good few more years in it. There’s plenty of black and blue fruit, spice and cedary oak finished with fine tannins. Penna Lane’s Clare Cab is a stunning varietal Cabernet built for the long haul. An hour or two of breathing sees a beautiful perfume emerge, which coalesces with rich fruits to form a deep palate packed with violet, blackcurrant, earth and tomato leaf. Perfect with a big lump of protein.
